Social workers asked to shape the future of practice education through survey

Social Work England is asking social workers to share their views on practice education in a short survey. The findings will help the regulator to build a more in-depth knowledge of the practice educator workforce to support this critical role in social work education and training in England.

Social Work England is engaging the sector to explore recognition, guidance and professional development opportunities for practice educators. It wants to hear from any social worker with views on practice education, including current and former practice educators, people who have trained as a practice educator, social workers who support students and those who are considering becoming a practice educator.

As part of Social Work England’s education and training standards, all students must complete 200 days in practice. Practice educators prepare students for the real world of social work by helping them to apply their academic learning in a practical setting. Successful placements help students to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours that underpin the social work professional standards and give the public confidence in the profession.

Sarah Blackmore, Executive Director of Professional Practice and External Engagement, said:

“Practice educators play an essential role in social work education and training. They support students to succeed in their studies, gaining the skills they need to join the register, become an asset to the workforce and protect the public.

There is a role for us as the regulator to support them and explore potential options for regulatory oversight. To do this, we first need to better understand the shape of the workforce.

We’re pleased to be advancing this work in partnership with our Practice Education Development Group and Education and Training Advisory Forum.

“We would like social workers to share their views through our survey and help shape the next stage of this important work.”

The survey is open until 5pm on Friday 6 February 2026. It should take no more than 5 minutes to complete. There is further information on Social Work England’s website.
