We are aware that this may impact some students and are sending advice to all universities offering approved social work courses.

Due to our registration requirements, graduates can only apply to register with us if (both of the below):

  • they have been awarded the exact qualification as named on our approved courses list for their institution
  • their course provider has supplied us with a pass list showing the award of the exact qualification.

The Social Worker Regulations 2018 only allow us to register applicants if the social work graduate has a recognised qualification. In our communication to universities, we have asked them to advise any impacted final year social work students that they will not be eligible to register until they receive their final award that matches their award title. We cannot accept non-honours awards or non-approved exit awards that do not meet these requirements.

Anyone wishing to practise as a social worker in England must be registered by law. As the regulator we are required to uphold the integrity of the register to maintain public protection and confidence in the social work profession.
